This review is going to be on Deadpool which came out February 12, 2016. So, you want to have fun at the movies?Do you want to forget about all the problems in your life for once? Go see Deadpool! I have never had more fun in the theater. This movie is a perfect twist on what we have all become so familiar with, the superhero genre. The superhero genre is our favorite type of movie, and this movie took a risk and put a huge spin on it. And, crazy enough, it worked! This movie had the perfect balance of raunchy comedy, brutal action, and a non-clichéd romance. This is no ordinary superhero movie.
First
off, a brief summary of the film. The film’s main character is Wade Wilson. He
is a Special Ops Agent turned mercenary who gets diagnosed with cancer. He is
not afraid to die but instead afraid to leave his girlfriend. So, he goes to a
creepy and unreliable location to receive a treatment that can apparently
“cure” him. This ends up giving Wade the extreme ability to heal any wound or
injury. He is basically invincible. However, he was disfigured from this
experiment and is very hard to look at so he does not go to Vanessa. Ajax
(Francis), the man who tortured him and made his face like that supposedly can
fix him. Then, long story short, Wade becomes Deapool, a fourth wall breaking,
foul mouthed superhero (or anti-hero) so he can find Ajax and get his faced
fixed. But, within all of this, he has some members of the X-Men trying to get
him to stop all the killing and immature behavior. Eventually, he gets them to
help him in the final fight against Ajax where they are victorious. When
Deadpool realizes that Ajax was deceiving him and cannot actually fix him, he
shoots him and there you have it, Deadpool is the winner and him and Vanessa
end up together because she is just happy he is not dead.
Now,
let’s get into what makes it so good. To have a good movie, you must have good characters,
and that’s what this movie contains. It has Wade Wilson, a wise-cracking, vulgar
individual who talks to the audience like he knows it is his movie. Fox Studios
finally got the character right with this one. Yes, I am talking about the unfortunate
misstep with Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine which they reference in the
movie. The character is so free and outspoken where you cannot wait to see what
he says next. Every line by Wade Wilson in the movie is delivered perfect by
none other than Ryan Reynolds. This movie would not have been what it is
without Reynolds. In my mind, he is Deadpool. This goes right up there with
Downey and Evans as a perfect superhero casting. The best part is that you can
tell most of it is improvised because it is exactly how Ryan Reynold’s sense of
humor is. Ryan Reynolds is almost playing Ryan Reynolds in this movie which is
what makes his performance spot on. Next, there was Vanessa, who was played by
Morena Baccarin. I thought that this would just be another love interest forced
upon us that we did not really care about. However, I was wrong. Her character was
written in a way where she was the perfect match for Wade as she shared the
same messed up sense of humor as he does. Baccarin’s portrayal of this
character was also great as the chemistry flowed throughout the two characters
every time they were in scene together. The plot was characters driven as you
really grew to care and enjoy seeing them come to life. These two, a pretty
cool British, non-pain feeling villain, and then a few x-men make for a well
characterized movie.
Other
than the acting and characterization, the movie also had its action. The movie
was on an incredibly low 58-million-dollar budget which is unheard of in the
superhero genre nowadays. The action in the movie happened to look like it was
on a 250-million-dollar budget. The CGI was not obvious and the fights were
choreographed in a way where you felt they were actually fighting.
Lastly,
I would like to overview the directing, editing, and cinematography. The
director, Tim Miller, who was virtually unknown before this did a fantastic job
of capturing all of the right shots and scenes to make the movie the fun piece of
cinema that it is. The editing team was outstanding showing that you can tell story
using flashbacks without it being confusing. The production team did an all-around
great job with making the film flow.
I
highly recommend this movie if you are a fan of raunchy, vulgar comedy. Building
on that, the ideal audience seems to be 15-25 as it connects with a more modern
sense of humor. This is the first superhero/action movie where I found myself laughing
more than being on the edge of my seat, which is a good thing. The movie is
unique with its R rating yet still follows the outline for a good superhero movie.
It just adds its own twist. Deadpool is the first of its kind and is sure to produce
more like it.
