Jake's 10 Most Anticipated Movies of 2017

As 2017 approaches, I want to take a look at those movies which haven't left our brain knowing that they are coming out within the year.

10. Dunkirk

I was debating on whether to put this, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, or Alien: Covenant in the ten spot. But what it ultimately came down to was fulfilling expectations and Christopher Nolan has a great track record. So far, he has never made a film that I have not thoroughly enjoyed. Thus, this WWII epic is highly anticipated and based off the teaser, it looks beautifully shot. From the IMAX cameras to Christopher Nolan directing, what's not to anticipate?

9. Kong: Skull Island

This movie flew in under the radar with its suspenseful teaser. It gave us a look at the Skull Island with a new, more modern approach. The film is not set in the early 1900's like most adaptions of King Kong. So, we can expect a more exciting and action-packed movie. What is most exciting is the fact that this is going to cross over with the Godzilla movies. The thought of Kong fighting Godzilla with today's technology and special effects is something to look forward to.

8. War for the Planet of the Apes

Finally, we get to see how the apes fully take over! This is the final movie of the new and realistic prequel trilogy. Caesar, the head ape, has had a great story throughout these movies. I have never seen an animal characterized so much before. You can see the inner conflict he has with the constant struggle to choose the  humans or apes. I cannot wait to see how his story ends and where the new planet begins.

7. Spider-Man: Homecoming

After seeing Tom Holland's performance of the web-slinging teenager, this movie has had a lot of publicity. Even though this is the third reincarnation of Spidey, I believe that it just may be the best. Holland's spot on performance backed up finally with Marvel Studios is just the tone we have always needed for the character. While I am a die hard original trilogy fan, there is no denying that this is the most accurate and exciting version yet. We finally get to see him interact with other characters in the MCU which makes them feel all the more real. Not to mention Iron Man will be in this movie which will mash the humor of these lovable characters.

6. Logan

We assume everyone has seen the teaser for this movie. if you haven't, bring some tissues because its going to "hurt". As they play the classic Johnny Cash song, we see an older, more fragile Wolverine. You can see that his healing factor is slowly deteriorating while he ventures with a now extremely old Professor X and a young X-23. This is the last time we will see both Hugh Jackman as Wolverine and Patrick Stewart as Professor X. This may mean that we can expect at least one of them to pass in the film so be prepared for an emotional, character-driven movie.

5. Wonder Woman

We all were freaking out when she entered in Batman v Superman as her new rock theme played in the background. Now, we are getting her solo movie. The first solo superhero movie for a woman in this age of superhero movies. It has been log enough. We are ready for her to do what she does best in this darker toned universe. The action in this movie looks stunning as we get to see the wonderful Gal Gadot in slow motion breaking through windows.

4. Thor: Ragnarok

I enjoyed the first Thor movie as it introduced this Asgardian. But, the second one is one of my least favorite Marvel movies. It was a let down because of poor character use and plot. I am thinking that this one will be different than both of those though. I think that the studio finally realized that Thor deserves to have a great solo movie. So, they went along and got the two most powerful Marvel characters and put them in a movie together. From the foreshadowing in Age of Ultron to the post credits of Doctor Strange, you can tell that there is a bigger picture worth watching. We saw everyone else fight in Civil War, now let's see the most powerful face off gladiator style.

3. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

The first one will forever be in our brains for its unique style, incredible soundtrack, and fantastic characters. But, there were still some unanswered questions. Who is Starlord's father? Where did Nebula go? Does Groot have any memories? We are hoping they explore these concepts in this volume as promised. While this is exciting, what we really want to see is that mix of humor, action, and drama as it did in the first one. This movie has the Marvel May spot so this means its their big movie of the year which says a lot.

2. Star Wars Episode VIII

If there has ever been a more talked about movie than this please let me know. We have so many questions after Episode VII. We need answers! Star Wars has built a universe where we are hooked on whatever they do. I cannot wait to see Luke Skywalker back in action. I am really anticipating to see how his character has changed over the past 30 years. They have so many different roads to take this movie on and I cannot wait to see where they takes us next.

1. Justice League

Taking the number one is none other than Justice League. This movie follows the events in Batman v Superman and further explores more classic DC Comic superheroes. The modern big screen is finally going to bring Aquaman, The Flash, and Cyborg to life. Plus, they finally made Aquaman cool. I cannot wait to see all of these heroes team up and form the Justice League. I hope to see more innovation and modernization that Zack Snyder does so well in this third movie of his in the DC Extended Universe.
