Mike's Top 5 Favorite Anime Movies

5. Grave of the Fireflies

Grave of the Fireflies strays away from kiyazaki's usual fun and fantastical worlds. This movie instead provides a grounded and harrowing take on post World War II Japan.  The two children, Seita and Setsuko, are left to fend for themselves after the death of their mother, and go through non-stop struggles along the way.  Its nearly impossible to leave this one without shedding a tear.

4. Princess Mononoke

This one is more what you would expect from Miyazaki: fantasy world, animal-spirit-gods, and a hidden message about mankind's evolving relationship with nature.  One of the longest anime movies I have ever seen, Princess Mononoke provides a long, long burn, with a huge payoff at the end that makes it all worth it.

3. The Boy and the Beast

The Boy and the Beast is the first non-Miyazaki movie on this list, and it is much deserving. From the director of other great films like Summer Wars and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, this movie brings the same action and fun from, but the story packs more of a punch.  Seeing Kumatetsu's evolution as a character and the culmination of his changes at the end provides an epic ending to an epic movie.

2. Akira

Akira is truly one of the craziest movies I have ever seen.  I can remember the amazement going through my mind as the movie switched from intense action to complex and abstract dialogue over to a bike race scene almost instantaneously.  We have Akira to thank for the introduction of great Anime to America, and that alone can justify a place on this list.

1. Spirited Away

Spirited Away was the first ever Anime movie I had ever seen and a movie I have watched countless times.  Its hard to contextualize just what makes this movie so magical.  The fantasy is incredible, the story emotional, and the characters lovable, but there is something just a little more special about it.  This is truly Miyazaki's greatest work.
